Our daughter and her partner of 13 years (and wife of seven years) moved back to Maine from Massachusetts last year. Legally, however, their marriage dissolved as they crossed the state line. Suddenly their baby, our grandson, had only one legal parent. They could have moved to Connecticut, Vermont, New York, Rhode Island or New Hampshire and still be legally married, but they wanted to come home to Maine. Imagine if your family legally fell apart as you moved back to your home state.
We read letters from people who want to protect marriage. This marriage is the
marriage that needs to be protected. This is the marriage of two vibrant young adults, a family of two loving parents and an infant son, who are active members of our community. This marriage needs to remain intact and not be negated at the border.
