In the debate about our impending election, far too little has been said about the City Council’s responsibility to apply the Waterfront Protection Ordinance so that it both protects our existing businesses and protects our people from tar sands. That is ultimately the council’s responsibility. It is a responsibility they can and must exercise when the ordinance passes.

Proponents of the ordinance have no desire to shut down existing businesses and that is not what the words of the ordinance say. Their memo in support of Sprague Energy’s upgrade makes that clear.

South Portland has a long history of working hard to accommodate businesses. That is not going to change. The City Council will apply this ordinance to prevent tar sands operations and nothing more. They will do so with the full support of the public that voted for the ordinance. Vote for the Waterfront Protection Ordinance.
