Just in case you weren’t watching, the Republican leaders in the Maine House, Reps. Ken Fredette and Ellie Espling, have given Gov. Paul LePage a free pass on his outrageous behavior. They’ve blocked any attempt to, at the very least, censure the governor for behavior that drew negative attention to Maine from all over the world. Yes, it would have cost the state to bring the Legislature into session to take a censure vote, but the governor’s behavior warranted action. Taking action was the right thing to do, regardless of cost, in service to our democracy.
How are we to explain to the state’s children and grandchildren the governor’s behavior, and the leadership’s unwillingness to take meaningful corrective action? Exactly where will they draw the line on LePage? If not over this, what will it take? I shudder to think about it.
