Residents of Cumberland and part of Gray have had to come to grips with why state Rep. Mike Timmons, R-Cumberland, ignored the best interests of District 45 when he voted against the popular Land for Maine’s Future and solar energy legislation over the past two years. In a community known for its moderate views, Timmons’ party-line votes in support of Gov. Paul LePage’s agenda have been difficult to understand.

But the time comes when the decent and honorable thing to do “trumps” blind loyalty to party. I’m speaking, of course, about the governor’s crude, unwarranted outburst against another elected official over a purported insult directed at the governor. In an expression of respect for his constituents, Timmons should publicly denounce the governor. To remain silent is to condone his behavior.

The voters of District 45 are watching Timmons. Stand up to the governor’s behavior; stand up for decency and respect.
