As a senior citizen who has lived all my life in School Administrative District 51 I am extremely concerned about the school budget. Their budget has been increasing between 5.5 percent and 6 percent each year. How much more can residents pay?

The per-student expenditure is higher than any of the surrounding towns, while Cumberland schools are ranked sixth in the state. Yarmouth is No. 1 and Falmouth is No. 2. It is not the amount of money that you spend, but how you are spending it. I really feel that if the School Board took a long hard look at the budget, they could find ways of cutting. How much more can the seniors citizens and the young residents pay in taxes? Cumberland wants to encourage families to move to the town, but how can they afford to come?

I am proud of the Cumberland Town Council for approving the resolution requesting that the School Board take a harder look at the budget. Please consider voting no on the budget on June 12. Let us remain in our town.
