Why vote yes on Issue 1, the citizens initiative to Protect Portland Parks?
On June 10 we have the privilege of voting to invest in our city. Parks add energy and attractiveness to a city for its businesses, residents and visitors.
Their past neglect of Congress Square Park led the city to sell most of the park for private development. A potentially vibrant public space sold for pennies for a private event center. Yes on Issue 1 stops that sale, and the sale of other parks without a citizen vote.
As controversy over our parks has developed, we have seen how the city has responded to its citizens’ concerns. They have tried, unsuccessfully, to block a citizen vote on the issue. Maine Supreme Judicial Court, in a landmark decision, agreed the citizen initiative is legal.
Don’t wait for June 10, vote absentee, now, at City Hall.
