As a former trustee of Falmouth Memorial Library, I am pleased the Town Council voted unanimously to put a bond referendum for a much-needed library expansion on the November ballot. The current library is inadequate and there are structural concerns. Parts of the basement have standing water resulting in mold problems. The small rooms of the original building are restrictive and do not allow for change. There is limited shelf space so that for every book added to the collection, one must be withdrawn. When the library last expanded there was one staff computer and the Internet was just a dream. Now, people come to the library to use public computers or bring their own computer. Unfortunately, there is no space to add more public-access computers and people looking to plug in their own devices often cannot find outlets. Falmouth deserves a 21st-century library. Vote yes for the library.
