I welcome a new opinion writer in The Forecaster, for contention is good for a healthy public culture. For the life of me, though, I cannot fathom why you have chosen Julie McDonald-Smith for the task. As a historian, I was enticed by her claim that America is going to hell in a handbasket because children are taught a history comprised of “liberal codswallop” (what – no piffle, bunkum or balderdash?). Reading, I was dismayed that instead of marshaling even a single fact in defense of her argument, she dedicates a third of her essay’s 803 words to an extended quotation by Ronald Reagan. Conservativism, and your readers, deserve a more capable spokeswoman.
