I felt proud to be a Falmouth teacher at the March 30 Town Council meeting as many residents applauded the quality of education offered by our public schools. Make no mistake, my colleagues and I work tirelessly to meet every student’s varied needs. When designing instruction for our learners we take into account a host of learning styles, stages of development and emotional factors. Our youngest learners deserve nothing but our full commitment, dedication, expertise and best programming options.
With that said I was very disappointed by the position and statements made by a few councilors regarding the proposed school budget and the comments about all-day kindergarten. The current expectations and classroom schedule for our youngest and most dependent learners is overwhelming. I believe the only way to give our kindergarteners what they require in a relaxed and developmentally fulfilling environment is to provide an all-day kindergarten experience. An all-day kindergarten program will allow our youngest students the ultimate amount of time to learn, play and grow.
I urge all of Falmouth’s councilors to support the proposed school budget and allow it to go to the voters as is on June 14.
