Falmouth is embarking on a mission to honor and memorialize our veterans of foreign wars. This long-overdue monument will be placed at the entrance to our VFW Hall, and will memorialize Falmouth’s fallen military heroes. For many communities, memorials to those who served and paid the ultimate price are the center point of their town. Now Falmouth has the opportunity to add an important missing ingredient to the fabric of our town. I was honored to help form the Veterans Memorial Committee in 2012, and to work with the late Arthur Fredericksen that year as the groundwork for this memorial was established.
Art, who passed away last year, was a cornerstone of our community and a passionate sentinel standing guard at the VFW Hall. I enjoyed spending time with him there over a cup of coffee, listening to him tell stories about his and others’ days of service. He was a true ambassador of the “Greatest Generation” in our midst, and he is greatly missed. It was his passion that assembled a committee of dedicated people who have worked very hard to put in place the plans to make this monument a reality.
Now it’s our turn to help. The goal is to erect and dedicate our memorial by Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11. The monument will be funded by contributions from all of us, and there is no time to waste. I ask everyone in this community that can, to please make a donation towards this very worthy and important effort.
