One measure of a civilized society is the character and quality of its public institutions. One hallmark of an enlightened citizenry is its willingness to support those institutions. The residents of Yarmouth have an opportunity to express that kind of enlightenment in the June 25 ballot initiative.

The Merrill Memorial Library is a treasure. Its programs appeal to a broad constituency, and the library provides a serene and civilized environment for thought and serious interaction. But the building is showing its age. The proposed bond issue will raise funds to restore the library to its rightful place as a welcoming beacon for everyone who enjoys its environment and the opportunity for intellectual and social interaction, which constitutes the basis of the library’s mission.

I urge all my neighbors and every resident of Yarmouth to vote yes on the library bond issue on June 25.
