The South Portland ballot has a question asking for a vote to bond $14 million to close the present Municipal Services Facility, the public works complex on O’Neil Street, and build a new “green” one on the present Highland Avenue transfer site to include a swap shop and a truck wash big enough for even our largest fire trucks.
It includes public works, city buses for transportation, and the Recreation Department equipment, including excavation equipment and lawn mowers. The “new” dollars out of your pocket will be limited and only raise your tax rate two years on the 20-year bond. In 2017 it would cost you 7 cents per $1,000 of your tax assessment. In 2018 that would drop to 2 cents per $1,000. In 2018-2019 the city finishes paying an existing bond and those moneys will move over to pay this one and no more tax increase.
Please vote yes. It is time.
