Most of us only answer to one boss, and that’s challenging enough. South Portland’s city clerk answers to seven city councilors, in addition to serving our city’s 25,000 residents and hundreds of business owners. The complexity of her job is something most of us can scarcely comprehend.

The municipal clerk is one of the most important positions in any community. They facilitate our elections, they maintain our vital records, and they ensure our democracy runs smoothly. Without town and city clerks, our society as we know it today simply would not function.

During the nine years I’ve lived in South Portland, I have been so impressed by Susan Mooney’s talent, dedication, and knowledge. Every time I’ve had a question, she has been able to answer it promptly and thoroughly — and she has done so with kindness, clarity, and patience.

South Portland is a better community because of Mooney. I know I’m not alone in wanting to extend my sincere and heartfelt gratitude for her many years of unparalleled service to our city.
