I urge Cumberland residents to attend the Town Council meeting Monday, Jan. 25, to support that a trail loop on the Town Forest be reserved exclusively in winter for cross-country skiers and snowshoeing. This greatly improved trail behind the Town Hall was dedicated with the condition of prohibiting motorized vehicles.
The Conservation Commission later recommended to the Town Council “not to permit snowmobiles on the green portion of the trail as depicted in the 2014 Map of the Town Forest Trail except for the snowmobile crossings. The speed at the trail crossings should be at no more than 10 mph. The town should make trail crossings safe by adding fill to the sides of the snowmobile trail at these points where necessary.”
Crossing by snowmobiles would continue to be permitted on all trails previously used, plus a new link.
