Very ironic that in a city where so many people are concerned with pedestrian safety issues and where the city itself touts it’s walkability that the Portland snowplows still see fit to plow snow from the streets onto the sidewalks.

By city ordinance all property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks abutting their property. But the city selects some sidewalks abutting private property for clearing, but not others, and then does not even clear the snow from sidewalks abutting some publicly owned properties. Every winter we have the same problems and are told it will be addressed, but nothing changes.

While I was clearing a crosswalk entrance of snow I watched a city sidewalk plow clearing the snow from sidewalks abutting property owned by one of the wealthiest people in New England while us locals living on the “other” side of the street were shoveling “our” sidewalks for the second time because of the street plowing.
