I would like to thank the Scarborough Town Council and everyone who responded positively to the changes being made to the “horses on the beach” ordinance, which will now require the display of a large, visible permit number by all horse riders on the beach. Hopefully the visible permit will improve compliance and enforcement of the clean-up after your animal rule.

For far too long, many people have had the attitude that the beach is the largest toilet in the world – and it gets flushed twice a day, whether it needs it or not. The manure in the tidal zone just gets flushed away, no problem. Thankfully, more people recognize that we all have a responsibility to take care of the resources we have been entrusted with.

Dog owners should take note.
