Many South Portland and Cape Elizabeth residents as well as tourists use state Route 77 to get to and from the Mill Creek area, across the Casco Bay Bridge to Portland, or go the other way to the wonderful beaches in Cape Elizabeth.

Those of us who use this road were alerted to work being planned by the Maine Department of Transportation to resurface a one-mile stretch from the Cape Elizabeth town line to Broadway in South Portland. Work started by stripping off the top layer of asphalt. Good so far. Manhole covers and catch basins were raised to meet the level of the new pavement being put down. Still good. The new pavement was put down to complete the job – almost.

Oops. Did MDOT forget the last approximately 75 yards in the northbound lane next to Mahoney Middle School? They also need to review the southbound lane in front of the Pizza Joint, as it’s bumpy even with the new asphalt. Has MDOT run out of money for the project?

If the answer is yes, those of us who use the road on a daily basis might get together and pass the hat at the light on Broadway so MDOT will have the funds to finish the job.
