It’s been shown that the early years of a child’s development are critical for their future. That’s why investing in early childhood education is key to economic opportunities for all our children.

So I was pleased to see that Democratic state Sen. Eloise Vitelli’s measure to provide start-up funding so school districts can offer pre-kindergarten programs has become law. Vitelli’s bill provides a framework to implement pre-K education to all school districts in Maine by the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

As a sponsor of this bill Eloise drew on her experience as a Head Start teacher and education coordinator as well as a VISTA volunteer. She has also served on her local school board and has been endorsed by the Maine Education Association.

Only by investing in our children’s education can we begin to close achievement gaps in Maine. That’s why I will vote for Eloise Vitelli in Senate District 23.
