Freeport’s “Hometown Celebration”on July 7 was an impressive first-time collaboration between local nonprofits, school organizations, and local businesses. Volunteers of all ages from Durham, Freeport and Pownal mobilized amazing energy to host this event, intended to celebrate our community’s evolution over the past century from a “mill town” to the vibrant, diverse, and welcoming place it is today. Clearly evident was the commitment of our residents to strengthening the social fabric; there are an astounding number of organizations who collectively advance educational, recreational, and cultural progress. The very demanding preparation was actively supported by many of our local small businesses and restaurants, with the usual generosity and spirit, providing the essential resources that drove this endeavor. Finally, the day publicly showcased the distinctive network of groups and individuals for whom this is permanent destination, while providing residents the opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate our consummate vitality.
