Residents of South Portland live with oil tankers coming and going daily. I support business as usual and I support the WPO, which will allow such activity.
Now, picture two 70-foot smokestacks next to Bug Light, emitting stinky toxic chemicals necessary to make tar sands flow. The permit was approved and was in place, but it expired. Do we want these stacks ruining the waterfront and our air along Bug Light, the marina, Southern Maine Community College, and Willard Beach?
Do we want a new pumping station near Kaler School and a new tank farm at Broadway and Preble?
I will never support the plans Portland Pipe Line had for this new-use business; the dangerous and sly maneuver of exporting heavy corrosive tar sands through old pipes that weren’t designed for it.
Voting for the WPO protects South Portland from this new use and I’m all for that.
