The City Council of South Portland really hit a home run when they selected the three men for the tar sands Draft Ordinance Committee. Michael Conathan, David Critchfield and Russell Pierce have been meeting weekly, sometimes more frequently, ever since the process began. Everything they have done has been open and accessible to the public, and watching them work together has been a lesson in how “we the people” really works best. They check their egos at the door, do their homework, explore difficult questions honestly. Their facilitator, Jeff Edelstein, makes it all look easy. See for yourself on May 27 when the DOC invites comments on their work. Then, when they make their report to the City Council after that, we citizens can rest assured that we are getting the best possible ordinance. We should turn out in force to stand behind what they have done and make sure the council knows what we think.
