I applaud and support the town of Cumberland in its efforts to establish public land on the Atlantic Ocean. Currently, Cumberland is an oceanside community without any public/recreational access to the ocean, despite the fact it has over three miles of coastline. A park such as this will fill this important need while also enhancing the property values for everyone in the town.

Public access to the beautiful features of nature is a tenet of the conservation ideals. Pioneers such as John Muir, Rachel Carson and Theodore Roosevelt all advocated for government purchasing land to preserve it for public enjoyment. In 1910, Gifford Pinchot said, “conservation means the greatest good to the greatest number for the longest time. The natural resources must be developed and preserved for the benefit of the many, and not merely for the profit of a few.”
