Once again the Maine tourist industry opposes a tax increase that would increase revenue to help pay for road maintenance and construction. In this case, a 7-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax increase during summer months. They are concerned that the tax increase will discourage tourists from visiting Maine. Let’s put his fear to the “Martha” test:

A couple has planned well and looks at the daily cost of vacationing in Maine, including 150 miles of touring in a car that gets 35 miles per gallon: Lodging $150, breakfast $30, lunch $40, dinner $80, 4.28 gallons of gas ($2.60 per gallon) $11.14. Total: $311.14.

Cost of additional 7 cents per gallon tax? Thirty cents.

“Sorry Martha, we can’t afford to vacation in Maine this year.”

What do you think Martha will say?
