The Rev. Sandy Williams’ letter deserves comment. So does Bishop Joseph Malone’s recent sermon at the Augusta Civic Center. Both men spoke about gay marriage. Williams said the bible equates our gay neighbors with thieves and idolaters. Malone warned us that allowing gay marriage would somehow contribute to the breakdown of our families.

I read their comments over the phone to my cousin, who is a nun in the Philadelphia area. I call Sister Marie Laurence whenever I need moral clarification. Sister Marie spends her days helping people overcome drug addiction. She feeds the hungry. She helps people find jobs. Sister Marie has little patience for nonsense.

This was her response to both Williams and Malone: “Lord. The things we say in the name of Christian love. God help both of them.”
