A petition received sufficient signatures for the North Yarmouth selectmen to add it to the November ballot and to budget $100,000 to pay to have North Yarmouth exit School Administrative District 51. Out of concern for our communities, I urge North Yarmouth residents to take action to defeat this ill-conceived proposal.

The petition is apparently a response to a concern about property taxes and the pending proposal to retire North Yarmouth Memorial School. Those issues are separate, deserving separate discussions, and should not be confused with the impact of this petition.

It is important that all citizens take the time to become informed on this issue. Please attend one of the public meetings on Oct. 10. and Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at the North Yarmouth Town Hall. All informed community members must have their voices heard and vote at the polls on Nov. 6.
