The proposal to sell land for development is a faulty and limited vision of what North Yarmouth’s town center should be. The plan does not address building municipal offices and consolidating town properties, nor does it look ahead to possible future needs for space. The proposal does not consider the needs of citizens to have a true center for their activities, nor does it reflect the character of North Yarmouth.
Proponents of the plan seek to increase tax revenue by selling public land for private development, but while rebuilding the town’s iconic grange hall and then surrounding it with 30 houses may be a developer’s dream, it is an inappropriate use of valuable town property. I am voting no on Article 2 in the June election. When this proposal is rejected the town can work with a planner to move ahead with a more reasoned approach to the development of a town center.
