The article regarding the alleged physical assault and anti-gay slurs directed at James Melanson in Portland (“Portland police ask attorney general to review civil rights complaint, officer’s response,” Aug. 19) is disturbing for multiple reasons.

First, there is the despicable behavior by the tourist towards Melanson.

Then, there is the inexplicable reaction by the police to the incident, which implied that Melanson instigated the attack on him by having a completely understandable, non-violent reaction to the anti-gay slurs which were said to him. I realize that Portland is dependent on tourism dollars to fuel its economy, but allowing tourists to harass Portlanders is unacceptable.
