Tom Crotty’s letter criticized Edgar Allan Beem for failing to do his homework, but Crotty’s assertion that Hitler and Mussolini were left-wingers reveals a rather remarkable lack of research on his own part.

As to his claim that there’s absolutely “nothing in the history of the human race as noble and elegant” as a particular passage from the Fourteenth Amendment, had Crotty been paying attention in school, he may have stumbled upon such works – hardly ignoble or inelegant – as the “Iliad,” “Hamlet,” Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, or perhaps even the Declaration of Independence.
