Regarding Chalmers Hardenbergh’s letter, “Let’s tax Les Otten,” I caution him to consider the consequences of higher taxes in other states: People and businesses leave. From The Wall Street Journal, “Soak the Rich, Loose the Rich” (Arthur Laffer, May 18, 2009), from 1998 to 2007 more than 1,100 people every day moved from the highest tax states to the lowest tax states. Raising taxes now in Maine may seem like a short-term fix, but it would more likely be stepping into a slow revenue spiral downward.
