I appreciated Edgar Allen Beem’s piece reminding us that we are a country of immigrants and that they contribute to this country in many positive ways. For Maine, with a shrinking population and the implications for our future workforce numbers, welcoming immigrants with open arms is a matter of survival.

So it is particularly alarming to note on Republican gubernatorial candidate Shawn Moody’s website that he refers to immigrants as “illegal aliens.” He fails to address the impending shortage of workers, arguably one of the most critical issues the state faces.

Our next governor must recognize the value of immigrants and be very clear that Maine wants immigrants to move here, that we welcome their potential contributions to our society. Referring to people as “illegal aliens” may appeal to the Republican base, but demonstrates a fundamental misreading of one of Maine’s biggest challenges to economic growth.
