Edgar Allen Beem seems to think that taxing guns and ammo will do the job (The Universal Notebook, Jan. 21). Someone ought to tell him that they are already taxed, through the Pitman and Robertson Act of 1937. And part of that tax comes back to the states.

He has forgotten to mention (as most journalists do) that the real problem is the mentally ill and mentally disturbed. States and our government leaders hate to say the word “mental.” The majority of the shootings a caused by individuals in this category.

So why not leave lawfully legal gun owners alone and tackle the real problem? Take those that we know are mentally disturbed off our streets, and put them where we can give them some help.
