Thank you, voters of Harpswell, West Bath and East Brunswick for re-electing me to a second term in Maine House District 51. The last two years have been a remarkable experience, one of service through learning, listening, collaborating, advocating, communicating, all in order to best represent our district.

Though I was unopposed in the end, I had two opponents. Each called to tell me he was dropping out, one in June, the second in August. There was no mud slinging. I am proud to have always run a positive campaign focused on my record, not on tearing down my opponent. Unfortunately, not all candidates can say this; we all deserve much better. We need campaigns focused on the issues and legislators who represent their districts with honesty, determination, and compassion. Those we choose to represent us must listen, learn, and work effectively with others – legislators and constituents – regardless of political party.

While I am very proud to have successfully sponsored legislation to improve health care and college debt, the responsibilities of a legislator go far beyond passing laws. Another critical duty is “constituent services.” These are opportunities to serve whenever constituents ask for help or answers, give suggestions or advice. I am proud of being responsive and effective in finding those answers, linking people to appropriate resources, working together to solve complex problems. I am grateful to all of you for sharing your positions and concerns. I remain determined to represent you well.
