I am concerned by the Martin’s Point proposal for the development of the Hamlin School property on Route 77, at the intersection with Sawyer Street, in South Portland. My daughter attends preschool at Casco Bay Montessori School on the corner of Parrot Street and Route 77. We often walk to school, which includes crossing Route 77 at Sawyer Street.

Martin’s Point would undoubtedly increase the traffic at the intersection, as medical appointments are routinely scheduled at 15-minute intervals. Additionally, the proposal calls for parking spots on Parrot Street across from the entrance to the school. These spots would be at the bottom of a hill and, unless drivers back into the spots, cars would be backing out towards a preschool, into oncoming traffic, with lowered visibility due to the hill.

Martin’s Point’s proposal is not a good fit for the Hamlin School property. A smaller development in line with the current small businesses on Route 77 would be more appropriate and ensure that the current green space is not reduced.
