On behalf of the West End Neighborhood Association, I would like to thank everyone involved for the tremendous effort in helping us make the World’s Longest Lobster Roll event on June 7 a success. I’d like to thank those who donated the ingredients for the food and those who provided logistical support and engineering genius in the construction and transportation of the 6-foot  9 1/2-inch bun.

We also want thank the Portland Downtown District for putting on the Old Port Festival, all the employees of the city of Portland who helped us along the way and the many volunteers from the West End and beyond who showed up to help. We also received a generous financial contribution from Kraft Foods and, of course, the contributions of all those who came and ate, thank you. I’d like to add a special word of thanks to Michael Whittaker from the Reiche Branch of the Portland Public Library, who hatched this idea and brought it to fruition.

Thanks to everyone’s involvement in this project, WENA will be able to sponsor swimming lessons for over 250 children from the West End of Portland. It’s a community project like this that shows what makes it great to live in Portland and in Maine – people care about each other, help each other in our struggles and can enjoy each other’s successes. We appreciate these businesses’ and individuals’ commitment to our community and hope everyone had fun as well.
