On June 11, Scarborough voters will be asked whether they would like to continue to vote annually on the school budget for the next three years. Please vote yes. Otherwise, the Town Council alone will have final approval on each year’s school budget.

School costs account for more than two-thirds of each homeowner’s tax bill. And while everybody wants excellent schools, there needs to be a balance between school requests and affordability. The best way to assure an appropriate balancing is through the annual school budget referendum, which provides a critical check on the Town Council. When we vote on the referendum, we tell councilors if they got it right or wrong.

Don’t give up your right to vote. Vote yes on Question 2.
