When we moved to North Yarmouth 17 years ago to raise our family, we thought ourselves fortunate that we would be able to live in such a lovely town that was part of such an outstanding school district. North Yarmouth’s 46 year history as part of School Administrative District 51 is now threatened, as an ill-conceived petition comes before the electorate Nov. 6 asking our community to withdraw from SAD 51.

Given state funding realities, and our contractual obligations to the school district, we cannot cost effectively support a high-achieving school system on our own. There is also not another school district we could join that would result in lower taxes while offering the level of excellence of SAD 51.

This is not a vote to explore the issue. A yes vote obligates North Yarmouth to spend up to $100,000 formulating a withdrawal plan. We urge our fellow residents to vote no.
