As longtime residents of Scarborough, we want to express our support for the development of an ice rink on town-owned property through the efforts of a nonprofit organization. As Scarborough continues to grow, the cost for schools, public safety, roads and other infrastructure has repeatedly exceeded available tax revenues. It seems unnecessary for the town to either incur the expense of such a project or remove commercial land from its current inventory that might someday offer the potential for generating additional tax revenue. We favor the idea of a nonprofit organization taking the lead on such a project, raising the funds to build and maintain the facility, and using a currently under-utilized parcel of land on our town campus, so that residents and students alike can benefit.
