Columnist John Balentine has a point (“Here’s Something: LePage is right: No free ride for owners of electric vehicles”), but he misses “the point.”

It costs money to maintain and improve our transportation system. The federal fuel tax has not increased since 1993 (who opposes higher taxes?). The state tax has been frozen for seven years (who has been our governor for seven years?). So how do we get by? We regularly approve transportation bond issues.

Higher user fees would be a better way to go. Let the tourists and long-haul truckers help pay for the roads. They use them.

I am sure if we collect adequate user fees bright people (like Balentine) can find an equitable way to spend them.
