Rep. Anne Graham, D-North Yarmouth, did a great favor to every Maine homeowner with LD 1878, “An Act to Allow Abatement of Property Taxes Due to Hardship.” As a member of the Taxation Committee, I was shocked by a recent letter attacking her bill.

Before, state law required towns to tax homes fully for up to a year, even when they were damaged or destroyed by fire, flood, or any other hardship. Thanks to Rep. Graham, towns no longer need tax what does not exist.

My committee’s improvements to the bill could never have happened without Rep. Graham’s idea, planning, and outreach across the aisle. Like every one of her bills, LD 1878 passed both the House and Senate overwhelmingly. Of 186 Legislators, no Democrats and only four Republicans voted against it.

LD 1878 provides common-sense local control and tax relief. I thank the voters of North Yarmouth, Gray, and Pownal who elected Rep. Graham, and encourage them to reelect this remarkably effective new legislator.
