I’m retired and on a fixed income, so when I see the Cumberland Town Council approving contract zones that spend tax dollars to benefit developers and against residents, I worry about my taxes.

Town Manager Bill Shane told The Forecaster his “biggest concern” about passing this contact zone was about emergency access. However, in the 50 years that I have lived on Harris Road, there has been emergency access, even for citizens during storms. Ambulances get though just fine. Emergency access has never been a issue on Harris Road. So what Bill says is just not true.

What I see going on is a developer who has convinced our Town Council to get more houses on his lot, have the town buy the access easement. Then we have to pay for the improvements, all at taxpayers’ expense. That is a real good deal for him, and real bad for us taxpayers.
