The stakes are high for those voters now supporting independent Elliot Cutler for governor, rather than Democrat Mike Michaud. There is little question that Cutler has what it takes to govern Maine. The problem is, that view is shared by less than 20 percent of prospective Maine voters, according to both past and recent polling. In reality, there is little chance of putting Cutler in the Blaine House. No matter how unpleasant it is for Cutler supporters , a vote for him is quite likely to re-elect Republican Gov. Paul LePage for another four years.

In voting for Cutler, his supporters surely feel they are voting their conscience. But how does one’s conscience rest if one’s vote for Elliot Cutler results in the re-election of LePage?
