Thank you to The Forecaster and Peggy Roberts for a thoughtful article on the combined efforts by volunteers, the school district and the town to groom and maintain ski trails in Falmouth Community Park this year. After the new school construction displaced the Nordic ski teams’ usual training terrain, it took creative thinking and cooperation by the Athletic Department, the town and parent volunteers to find an alternative practice site. The solution they found benefits the whole community.

The article correctly points out the challenges of maintaining the trails in a public space for both community and school use. We are pleading for extra diligence by dog owners in cleaning up after their dogs, and for snowmobilers to avoid the groomed trails for the safety of the skiers, especially during practice from 2-5 p.m. The groomed portions of the trails are not just the ski tracks, but also the flat open space next to the tracks, groomed for “skate skiing.”

The Falmouth Ski Club would like to extend a special thanks to Jeff Mason, with the town’s Community Parks and Recreation Department, who has been very supportive of the effort to get the trails in place, and with a dedicated group of parent volunteers, has been providing many hours of grooming to keep the trails smooth and available for the use of the whole community.
