As a newcomer to Maine, I support the citizens’ initiative to purchase and preserve the undeveloped part of Clapboard Island.

A job brought my family to Maine 16 months ago, and the school system to Falmouth in particular. But it is Casco Bay and its wonderful islands that have proven the most astonishing aspect of our new life here.

We get a thrill each time we bike to Mackworth Island or drive over the bridge to Cousins Island. Thanks to SailMaine, our formerly landlocked 12-year-old son and dozens of other young people get to sail Optimists to Fort Gorges. At his urging, our family is now on a mission to take the ferry to every possible island in Casco Bay, starting with Peaks and Chebeague.

I’ll be donating to the Maine Coast Heritage Trust so that local families, Scouts, community education day-campers and athletes can kayak, sail, or paddleboard out to Clapboard Island. An unspoiled, car-free island right in our own backyard.

The very idea is amazing. This is the only place I’ve ever lived where such an experience could ever be possible.
