On Lunt Road, between the Mason-Motz building where Falmouth’s community programs are now located, and the former Lunt School, is Falmouth’s new Town Green. The lawn is ready for a gazebo to be built and a holiday tree to be planted.

In 2012, the town, as part of its sale to OceanView of the Lunt and Plummer buildings, contracted for OceanView to “construct and maintain” the green “to include at a minimum a playground, gazebo, a green suitable for meetings, concerts, a farmer’s market and winter holiday tree and lighting ceremony.” Many of us applauded the town’s vision for such a public gathering place.

So it is a sad surprise that the Town Council is considering conveying a good part of the front of the Town Green to OceanView, so it can build a private, 12-unit market-rate apartment building. OceanView’s proposed landscaping for the remainder of the green eliminates any gazebo, holiday tree and concert gathering space, in favor of plantings and walkways that make the area seem like OceanView property.

I would love for my young children to enjoy concerts, holiday and memorial gatherings at this town square, holiday tree, gazebo and all. So please join me to request the council hold true to its original vision for this unique public gathering place.
