I write to urge South Portland voters not to fall for the Marijuana Policy Project’s national line that marijuana is “less harmful than alcohol.” The harm from marijuana use or alcohol abuse is real. Degrees of harm are not the issue when you are a youth being offered a joint/beer by a using parent; a person hit by a driver under the influence; an employer trying to figure out how to hire people who will show up, work effectively and not be sick because of being high; a patient wanting clear-headed medical care; elderly wanting safety in their congregate housing, and the list goes on. Don’t cannibalize your community just because someone wants to get high on cannabis. Recreational marijuana is harmful. Please vote no.
