A group of dedicated citizens in School Administrative District 51 has been exploring a revenue-generating opportunity for repurposing Drowne Road School. This innovative school model would capitalize on our existing assets and enhance our community. The energy generated at each meeting has been infectious, and it fills me with hope for the future of our school district.

Excitement is building for Maine Farm Enterprise School, which offers a unique, sustainable vision of a rigorous public school. What sets MFES apart is the emphasis on environmental stewardship, the opportunity for collaboration among students, local entrepreneurs, and farmers, and the celebration of our local assets, including, but not limited to, farming.

Possibilities for this school model might include growing, preparing and selling produce or fresh baked goods in a cafe; offering cooking and nutrition classes; providing spaces for local businesses; creating student apprenticeships and mentoring programs with retirees. Maine Farm Enterprise School would allow students to explore Maine’s natural resources and connect with mentors to ground their education in their community.

The more people learn about MFES, the more enthusiasm grows. As it says on the Web site: “Together, we can save our natural heritage, create jobs, and help our young people envision a future in Maine.”
