As the holiday season gets underway, I am writing to ask our neighbors to pause and remember those living right in our own community who face economic hardship. At the beginning of November a new food pantry with expanded hours and offerings opened behind Cumberland Town Hall for residents of Cumberland, North Yarmouth, New Gloucester and Pownal. Several churches, local businesses, boy and girl scout troops, 4H clubs, our SAD 51 schools and over 60 volunteers from the surrounding communities are now helping stock and staff the pantry. While it is well-stocked for the holidays, it is anticipated that 50 families, including many with children and elderly members, will utilize the pantry during the year and contributions will be needed year round.

While donations of unexpired nonperishable items are always appreciated, cash donations are most needed because gifts allow those operating the pantry to purchase items needed at very low costs. Since the food pantry is staffed by volunteers utilizing existing facilities, overhead is very low; donors can be assured that contributions will go to serving those in need. Simply mail or drop off a check (made out to the Town of Cumberland/Community Food Bank) at Town Hall, 290 Tuttle Road, Cumberland ME 04021. Donations are tax deductible and donors will receive an acknowledgment letter from the town. More information about the food pantry is available by contacting the Cumberland Town Hall.

If you are financially able, please take a moment now, and write your check to support this important community service.
