I write in response to the story in your July 23 edition about the Atlantic Regional Federal Credit Union coming to Cumberland despite objections from some residents. While I do not live in Cumberland and wish to take no position on the issue, I thought your readers might like to know how the community is benefiting from the presence of this business on Main Street before a building has even been constructed.

As manager of the Freeport presentation of Circus Smirkus, I reached out to Steve van Rensselaer of Atlantic Regional FCU when I heard that they would be locating a branch in Cumberland. I explained to him that there were close to 100 children from Cumberland looking for sponsorship to attend our matinee on Aug. 4. The town’s Recreation Department could not afford to bring everyone to the big top, so I needed to raise money to subsidize their ticket costs. Mr. van Rensselaer did not hesitate to jump in and be a good neighbor. Atlantic Regional FCU made a very generous donation that will allow dozens of children from Cumberland to enjoy the magic of Circus Smirkus.

Between this wonderful community outreach and the fact that Cumberland resident Jared Mongeau is in the cast of the Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour, we are delighted that Cumberland is running away with the Circus this year. Many thanks go out to Atlantic Regional FCU, the town of Cumberland and the Mongeau Family.
