On Sunday, Oct. 13, five out-of-state sea kayakers had the misfortune to arrive back at their launch site at Cousins Island to find each of their cars with two slashed tires on the driver’s side. Kudos to kind Yarmouth Police Officer Derek Lucas for greeting us as we landed, and informing us that AAA would be arriving shortly with two platform trucks. Thank you anonymous AAA drivers for gently shuttling our kayak-laden cars to be serviced at the nearby Tire Warehouse, which was open on a Sunday, on a holiday weekend. Extra thanks to Matt Dolloff and Nick Brooks, who expedited repair to our cars, including a special delivery of two unique tires from their sister Lewiston business. What at first appeared to be an unresolvable problem, quickly turned a corner, and we soon parted for home, with the realization that human kindness trumps badness every time.
