There is a workforce housing project being proposed for the town of Falmouth. Forty-eight units will be located next to the “new” police station. In theory, affordable housing sounds fine. However, concentrated development in this particular area promotes sprawl. Questions include the potential costs to the town, continuing responsibilities of Falmouth, how we maintain affordability and the risks involved with using tax increment financing. Would it be better to integrate workforce housing throughout our town, as Cape Elizabeth requires?
There is inconsistency with the process of issues that takes place in Falmouth. Some major projects have required forums and others are decided by town councilors. There should be a public forum with ample notice before the Town Council to discuss concerns and questions that have gone unanswered.
